Entrusted with the task of spotting any potential terrorists and chemical specialists who try to get a visa, Kate Abbott, the genius newly-recruited security officer at the U.S. Embassy in London, senses there's something off with the Romanian doctor, Emil Balan; however, her concerns are dismissed by her boss. But, then, after a devastating bombing attack in the heart of the city, Kate will surprisingly find herself in the spotlight and on the wrong side of the law, while at the same time, targeted by the international assassin known only as the Watchmaker. Can Kate unearth the conspiracy and make it in one piece before a new act of terrorism strikes the metropolis?
A State Department employee newly posted to the American embassy in London is charged with stopping terrorists from getting into the U.S. That puts her right in the line of fire and she is targeted for death and framed for crimes. Discredited, she is forced to go on the run while she tries to clear her name and stop a large-scale terrorist attack set for New Year's Eve in Times Square.
I almost missed this movie because of the bad reviews but am I glad went to see this movie.
We have grown so accustomed to unrealistic, fantastic, GUI, drama, emo movies. Where parody becomes standard and the clichées are more and fasters pushed through your retina as you can blink. With the popcorn-thread-of-the-mill instaflix that are pushed out in battery like clients on the toilet in a Mexican chain-restaurant.
This movie, however, grabs back to a time in cinema before this, with a slight modernized take: It reminds of these olders detective movies, or even classic nois movies (but a little bit less slow and less dialogue). The director shows his desire for perfection and love for cinematography. And it shows. No shot seems to be without purpose, and small hints on the story are thrown in. While you are left to let the image "sink in" and feel it, with an atmosphere and tone is very in sync with the progressing story. For example; during the introductory scene, the atmospherics are very crisp, with a particular lightning. Almost claustrophobic - It instantly pulls you in the movie, right next to the actors. There was an opportunity for gore, but instead a scream and a poetic scene keeps burned on your retina instead, when the screen goes black. A shot of "people celebrating" doesn't come across as fake or staged and isn't just one quick flash. It's so "generic", even, that this movie will still stand in 10 years. Or could be filmed 20 years ago. You feel "you are inside the crowd", or could be just strolling by yourself.
Not only does the movie "live", it is very realistic in scenario. This day and age, we are so accustomed to fantasy and animation, with Baine like camera angles, rushed explosions, scenes and "all the tricks thrown in", idiot clichées and everything explictly explained, making it a horrid mess of unwatchable flickering. In this movie, the realism and nuanced motivations ("why would someone partake in such a bad thing?") and are explained in a brief way without insulting the viewers' intelligence. These characters could be your friends who suddenly stumble into this situation.
As a last point, the "terrorism" theme is so exploited and overused MURICA! that any synopsis with "terrorist" in it, makes my stoumach turn and conclude 90% of the movie will be from the "terrorist movie cheat sheet and template". But this take on it, becomes more realistic and is a double thumbs up towards real people doing real things.
More movies like this would be very welcomed. But perhaps, in the popcorn short-attentspan fantasy age, not many will know how to appreciate real cinematography.
I am pretty sure that if you have seen your share of thrillers, you will have a great feeling of deja vu while watching "Survivor". The same basic plot has been done many times before. To be fair, there are a few fresh touches, like the fact that the heroine of the movie is not a superwoman, just very smart. And Milla Jovovich does do pretty well in this role. And for what was just reportedly just a $20 million budget, the movie generally looks pretty good. Anyway, I wouldn't have minded that fairly predictable script had the main problem I had with the movie not existed, and that problem is that the movie isn't very exciting or tense enough. There's almost a matter-of-fact feeling throughout. We don't sense that the heroine is in real danger or that something very bad is brewing that could bring a major disaster. Maybe had the budget been higher, the production could have not only put in a few more action sequences, but made them more elaborate, which might have gotten the blood really pumping. This movie really isn't bad, but it's without much needed bite. By the way, fans of Angela Bassett and/or Robert Forster should be warned that they are given precious little to do.
This is the kind of filmmaking that gets touted as "workmanlike" when it's really straight-laced to the point of tepidness.
